Dr. Dennis Embry
On May 21, 2009, with the help of several generous sponsors, 21 Reasons brought Dr. Dennis Embry to Portland for a talk on "Raising Healthy Kids: Strategies for the Whole Community".
Dr. Embry is a nationally acclaimed child psychologist whose work has taken him from Sesame Street to the Secretary of Defense with stops in between. He is a National Research Advisory Council Senior Fellow and a scientist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Prevention and Intervention and the National Center on Early Adolescence, an author of evidence-based prevention programs, and an advocate of a whole-community approach to raising healthy kids.
Seller-Server Trainings
During early summer 2009, 21 Reasons hosted free on- and off-premise seller-server trainings for Portland area businesses. The trainings were taught by Frank Lyons of B.C. Consultants. A total of 44 people attended the two trainings.
In addition to the trainings that 21 Reasons sponsors every year, there are several other opportunities to attend a training. Currently, Nappi Distributors is hosting a series of trainings. Please see our Events page for more information.
2008 Community Forums
On May 6, 2008, 21 Reasons held a Community Forum at the Cumberland Town Hall. The towns of Cumberland, North Yarmouth, Falmouth, Freeport, Yarmouth and Chebeague Island were all represented. Participants met in small groups to discuss the many issues surrounding underage drinking, and brainstormed possible community solutions. Many attendees learned about 21 Reasons for the first time, and are excited to continue collaborating with us in the future!
On May 12, 2008, 21 Reasons held a Community Forum at the Gray-New Gloucester High School for the towns of Gray and New Gloucester. Numerous local community members, and experts in the field, provided a panel presentation of local MYDAUS data, law enforcement underage drinking trends, medical concerns around underage drinking, alcohol industry information, and much more. This event was covered by local cable.
Safe Homes, Safe Communities
On April 25, 2008, the Junior League of Portland recognized 21 Reasons work through a $2,000 grant through their Safe Homes, Safe Communities initiative.
