Got 5 minutes? 10? Here are some ideas for what you can do today to help stop underage drinking: So, What Can I Do?
Portland Opportunities
Action Teams: The two current teams are Public Education Action Team and the Policy Change Action Team. Meetings are held about once per month. For more information about these groups, contact Jo Morrissey.
Outreach: We frequently can utilize adult and young adult volunteers to help represent us at events—whether at informational tables or administering surveys or anything in between. These events occur several times a year, and are always listed at Volunteer Maine. For more information about these opportunities, contact Jen Hodsdon.
Youth: Most of our work is with adults, but there are a few things that youth can do to help. We encourage youth to participate in the Sticker Shock program created by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse, or to help out with focus groups information. In late 2010 we’ll be offering a Youth Activity Guide for youth groups to utilize in creating community change to prevent underage drinking. Contact Jen Hodsdon if you have questions.

Parent Discussion Hosts: Concerned about underage drinking? We are currently looking for volunteers to host parent discussions in their homes. These discussions are a chance for parents to come together in an informal setting to discuss underage drinking and how to prevent it. A trained facilitator is provided to lead each discussion. Check out this handout for more information, or contact Suzanne DiBella-Olson at sdibella@mcd.org.
